What Is a Latvian Typing Test?

A Latvian typing test measures how quickly and accurately you reproduce Latviešu text, including every diacritic. A passage that turns š into s, ā into a, or ņ into n is not an exact transcription even when a reader can guess the intended word.

Use the same duration, difficulty, and keyboard layout when tracking progress. Otherwise a layout change or easier passage can look like a speed improvement when it is really a different task.

The Modern Latvian Alphabet Has 33 Letters

The Latvian Language Agency lists 33 letters in the modern Latvian alphabet. Twenty-two are unmarked Latin letters, while eleven carry diacritics: ā, č, ē, ģ, ī, ķ, ļ, ņ, š, ū, and ž.
